As the sun rises on another day of Ham radio exploration, enthusiasts like myself are constantly on the lookout for equipment that offers a perfect blend of performance, versatility, and affordability. Enter the MFJ-1794 Portable HF Vertical, a beacon of excellence in the world of portable antennas.

At first glance, the MFJ-1794 may seem unassuming, but make no mistake – this vertical antenna packs a punch. Boasting high performance and low cost, it’s the ideal solution for operators looking to maximize their DX potential without breaking the bank. Ground mounted and low profile, it seamlessly integrates into any operating environment, whether permanent or temporary, making it a versatile choice for both home stations and portable setups.

What truly sets the MFJ-1794 apart is its impressive band coverage. With 7 bands – 40, 30, 20, 17, 15, 12, and 10 meters – this antenna offers unparalleled flexibility, allowing operators to tackle a wide range of frequencies with ease. Whether you’re chasing DX on the higher bands or delving into the world of digital modes on the lower bands, the MFJ-1794 delivers reliable performance across the board.

Despite its compact size, the MFJ-1794 doesn’t compromise on power handling capabilities. With a rating of 1500W, it’s more than capable of handling the demands of modern HF transceivers, ensuring a seamless operating experience even at higher power levels.

The antenna came in a compact package that easily fit in my hatchback and everything was tied together and labelled to avoid confusion. The instruction manual is very helpful and covers everything from assembly to SWR adjustment and tuning. You’ll need  a few extra tools but those are indicated in the manual like a number 7 wrench and a Phillips head screwdriver etc.

Installation is a breeze with the MFJ-1794, whether you choose a ground or roof mount setup. With included hardware and U-bolts, you’ll have everything you need to get up and running in no time. Plus, options for ground radials or a ground rod further enhance performance, ensuring optimal signal propagation and efficiency. You have to trim the spokes to get the antenna resonant on the different band. I was a bit worried about how much I was trimming but in the end it works perfectly.

The antenna is below 2:1 on each of the 7 bands and my MFJ 929 tuner made quick work of the rest of the tuning. It was just amazing seeing it all come together in the end!

Versatility is the name of the game with the MFJ-1794. Whether you’re operating in a restricted space or setting up a temporary station for a field day event, this antenna adapts effortlessly to your needs. Its collapsible design, from a full 11 feet down to 7 feet, makes it easily transportable and perfect for on-the-go operations. Plus, its low profile and multiband capabilities ensure hassle-free operation, allowing you to focus on making contacts without worrying about antenna adjustments.

Performance-wise, the MFJ-1794 doesn’t disappoint. With a low radiation angle for DX and omnidirectional coverage, it’s designed to maximize signal strength and reach, even in challenging propagation conditions. Its highly efficient, end-loading design ensures that the entire length of the antenna radiates effectively, resulting in low SWR and consistent performance across the bands.

It has been mounted on my roof for a while now and it handles stormy windy weather just as well as sun filled days. Whether you’re going mobile or need a roof mounted antenna for your HF communications, the MFJ-1794 is sure to impress with its unmatched versatility and performance capabilities.

In conclusion, the MFJ-1794 Portable HF Vertical is a testament to MFJ’ s commitment to innovation and excellence in amateur radio antennas. With its compact size, impressive performance, and affordable price point, it’s a must-have addition to any Ham radio enthusiast’s arsenal.
