Embarking on the journey of enhancing my mobile ham radio setup, I meticulously combed through an abundance of options before finally deciding on the perfect match: the MFJ-345S lip antenna mount coupled with the MFJ-1422 dual-band mobile antenna. This combination seemed to tick all the boxes for me, promising exceptional performance packaged in a vehicle-friendly design.
As someone who revels in DIY projects, installing the MFJ-345S mount was quite the engaging experience. The mount, with its expansive 10-centimetre (4-inch) lip and robust reinforcing tabs, was reassuringly sturdy as Dirk ZS1X affixed it to the lip of my vehicle. The scratch-proof rubber guard was a detail I greatly appreciated, sparing me the worry of any potential damage to my car’s finish.
The mount’s design didn’t just protect my vehicle; it also provided a secure base for the MFJ-1422 antenna. With its impressive length of 105 centimeters (41.5 inches), the antenna was a sight to behold. It was designed to manage a substantial 150 watts (or just over 0.2 horsepower) of power. The gains were equally remarkable, at 3.2dBi on the 2-meter band
and 5.7dBi on the 70-centimetre (440 MHz) band, ensuring that my transmissions would carry far and wide with exceptional clarity.
The true test came when I took my setup out for a spin. The results were nothing short of spectacular. The clear and strong signals I received and transmitted were a testament to the 3.2dBi and 5.7dBi gains on the 2-meter and 70-centimetre bands, respectively. And the practical fold-over feature of the antenna—allowing me to lower it with ease when necessary—was a thoughtful addition that proved its worth on several occasions.
Installation was simplified by the inclusion of just over 5 meters (17 feet) of low-loss coaxial cable, ensuring minimal signal degradation across its length, and the thoughtful inclusion of an Allen wrench and weather protection caps marked MFJ’s commitment to a user-friendly experience.
Weeks after the installation, I am delighted to report that the MFJ-345S and MFJ-1422 combination has exceeded my expectations. Whether navigating urban sprawls or rural expanses, my communications have been consistently clear and reliable. This duo has significantly elevated my mobile ham radio experience without being obtrusive, blending seamlessly with my vehicle’s aesthetic.
This combination has proven to be a formidable ally in my mobile ham radio endeavors. It stands as a tribute to the thorough research I conducted, ensuring that I selected a pair that would deliver both in terms of performance and design. My satisfaction with this setup is profound, and I am quite pleased with the decision that has so clearly paid off.
My VW Amarok is now the proud base for this combo, and I am ready to participate in the events that require communications, such as HamNet and community events such as cycle and foot races.
